I can cook with Lavender and eat it too?

Cooking with Young Living Essential Oils is just one of the many ways we enjoy using our high quality therapeutic-grade essential oils. The subtle flavor of lavender in this recipe is yummy!

NOTE:  You can NOT cook with any essential oil!  Most essential oils are not therapeutic grade, thus are not for internal use.  They are cosmetic/fragrant oils.  Please do not cook with your essential oil unless it is Young Living or food grade safe!  :)

Lavender Blueberry Banana Bread

(recipe by Evelyn)

  • 1/4 pound (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature (Dairy Free use Earth Balance buttery spread)
  •  2/3 cup Sucanat (sugar- preferably organic, raw sugar not white)
  •  2 large eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted (preferably organic, unbleached) … I grind my wheat so I use 1 cup Organic Soft White Wheat Flour
  • 1 (or 2) drop Young Living Lavender essential oil
  •  1 teaspoon baking soda
  •  1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  •  1 cup whole wheat flour, unbleached
  •  3 large ripe bananas, mashed
  •  1 1/4 cups organic blueberries
  •  1/2 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped (optional)
  •  1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Madagascar Vanilla Extract is the best)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan, or coat with non-stick spray.

In a large bowl, combine the butter and sugar. Beat with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Sift the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt into a medium bowl.
Stir in the whole wheat flour and beat into the butter mixture.
Fold in the bananas, blueberries, walnuts, lavender, and vanilla.
Pour into the prepared pan.

Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack.

I haven’t used lavender in cooking myself yet, but I have eaten many yummy things with it in it, most recently a wonderful French honey that I think I may try using in some recipes. Your Lavender Blueberry Banana Bread sounds wonderful! Thank you for sharing it with the Hearth and Soul hop.

I’ve used essential oils before, but I didn’t realize you could bake with them. I use them for sugar scrubs and bath salts. This bread sounds amazing though.

Hi Tiffany! Thanks for your comment and visit to my site. Please understand this: MOST essential oils you can NOT cook with because they are not pure essential oils! People do not know there is a difference, sadly enough. Please do not cook with any essential oil. I only recommend using Young Living Oils to cook with because they are food grade safe oils. Look at your bottle and see if it says, “not for internal use.” If so, you will know it is not a pure therapeutic/healing essential oil, instead it is a fragrant/cosmetic/perfume oil. Hope that helps. Under the header of titles, click essential oils, and you will find an article that is called “What is an essential oil?” Read that. It should help clarify. Hope that helps!!! Blessings!

One drop of lavender oil is all it takes? I’m definitely going to have to try this recipe!

Hi Andrea!
Yes, one drop is all! Young Living oils are very potent and depending on which oil you use when cooking, you will just put a toothpick into the oil and use what is on your toothpick to flavor the foods! A little goes a long way with Young Living Oils! Can’t wait for you to try it! I agree with my son, “It’s yummy!”
