Do You Read Your Labels? What is Propylene Glycol?
Are you aware of what is in the products you purchase on a regular basis? Are you aware of what shampoo you are using? What lotion you use? Deodorant? If you are conscious about labels, do you search for items that say, “pure, natural, or even organic?” Do you walk away with the items in your shopping cart feeling great about the items you have purchased and never think to read the labels? Rightly so, right?! If it says, ‘pure, natural, or organic’ then that is what we are supposed to be buying, right? Well, no, not always!!! For a long time I focused on those great words, until one day I was curious as to what was in my organic shampoo, or pure/natural lotion. I could not believe my eyes! I was reading words that were not pure, were not organic, in reality were NOT safe for me and my family. So… what did I do? I furthered my research and my reading of labels and discovered once again, these words are not always what we, the average consumer, thinks they are and rightly should be.
I recently wrote a post on Aspartame. Please read about the side effects of Aspartame. Click Here.
Today I want to share with you Propylene Glycol
Propylene Glycol
A cosmetic form of mineral oil found in automatic brake and hydraulic fluid and industrial antifreeze. In the skin and hair, propylene glycol works as a humescent, which causes retention of moisture content of skin or cosmetic products by preventing the escape of moisture or water. The Material Safety Data Sheet warns users to avoid skin contact with propylene glycol as this strong skin irritant can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.
Ok, STOP there! Did you read that? The products we are buying off the shelf and putting ON our skin is the mineral found in break fluid, antifreeze! Why would we want that in our hair, on our face, and on our skin???
Known Health Effects of Propylene Gylcol

I don’t know about you, but that bothers me! We are constantly wondering why we are sick and have so many health issues, YET, we don’t think to relate them to what we eat, drink, and what we put in and on our bodies. This is scary stuff! So, once again, I am revamping our home more and more and seeing the need to constantly read the labels. Why take a chance with your health or your families health?
I have tried many products and companies and I am pleased to say I have found the products that work for me and my family. I am not here to promote or demote any product. That is for you to do yourself. I personally believe and trust in Young Living. I am not here to “sell” you on their products. The products speak for themselves. I have personally witnessed the products heal me and my family and numerous of my friends. I do love knowing that I am using products that will bring “healing” to my body on a physical, mental and emotional level.
Tips on where to start:
Check the ingredients in your toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, body lotion, deodorant, etc.
Why do toothpastes have a warning such as:
WARNING LABELS: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. Do not swallow. … In case of accidental ingestion, seek professional assistance or contact a poison control center IMMEDIATELY. Product warning labels are shown for a reason. It is a fact that many manufacturers use certain questionable and controversial chemical ingredients mainly because they’re CHEAP, and give the ILLUSION of working properly But more importantly for the manufacturer, they cost very little to fill the bottle, so it is a bigger profit margin for them. But residues of more than 400 toxic chemicals have been found in human blood and fat tissue.
This used to go in one ear and out the other, but the more I get healed and the better I feel, the more careful I am in what I put in and on my body. Do I really want to use a toothpaste with this warning label on it? Do I really want my children using it as well? Money can no longer be a factor or an excuse when it comes to our health! I have decided that my money goes into my health!
I am sure many (but not all) of you say, “But I can’t afford that price toothpaste, shampoo,or deodorant. We do not have that kind of money to spend.” I can appreciate that! I do know that if you don’t invest in your health now, you will invest in it later. Pay now or pay later! I would rather invest in my health and spend money on my health versus on things I don’t need. I need my health! Without my health, nothing else matters! (please know I am sharing this truth in love!)
Have a question on an alternative product to use? Ask away! Looking for alternatives? I can help! I care about you and your health! I personally use and highly recommend Young Living. Please find a product that is SAFE and chemical free!
Watch the video below from my friend, Sharnael and feel free to post your comments. Sharnael and I both love and highly recommend Young Living products for our hair and beauty products. Again, find a product that is right for you and please read your labels!!!

Hi again,
Forgot one thing. They make a form of propylene gylcol used in medicatons. Only a doctor c an get all the ingredients in a medication. The FDA will not even tell me. I have had some close calls with medication. Lunesta, Nebutol, diazepam, any prescripton ear drops, most eye drops and as you said toothpaste. So if you have problems with this, always ask your doctor to check it out. Pharmacies don’t like to as it takes extra time and they are always busy. If I live to be 100, maybe I can get a good list of items to avoid. A lot is hit and miss still after working on it 3 years.
I have tested as proplyene gylcol as my worst allergy. 4 on a scale of 1 to 4.
This stuff is in everything. As it is used as a carrier for scents, dyes, coloring and any artifical ingredient, they don’t have to list it as a primary ingredient. So you can be getting it and not knowing it. I asked my doctor and he said that to get all the ingredients in something with a scent, like a candle, would not be possible, as the carrier is not a main ingredient and it would also violate patents and copyrights. Great! So as it is considered a second or third ingredient in some things the manufacturer will not tell you if you call. Since, I can react with lip, mouth and facial swelling, it can get serious. Since I have other allergies, nickel, gold, and the list goes on, plus, I am diabetic, I went to a nurtionist. After looking at the four separate list of foods I can not eat, she said, “Eat only natural, nothing prepackaged and no fast food. So I grow a lot of my own food, eat lots of vegetables and only chicken. Needless to say, I have lost 27 pounds.
One other thing, did you know that beef is not red. It is brown. They dye it red. So it has proplyene glycol in it. Look at a pound of hamburger and you can see where the red dye stops. And meat does not have a ingredient label. Since I am allergic to this item, I have had to do a lot of research, as labels don’t tell me what I need to know. Peace to all. Linda
Not only is PG in cosmetics and personal care items, it’s also a food additive.

Hey Connie! Absolutely! You are so correct-pretty scary stuff… I appreciate you and your knowledge and desire for healthy living, naturally.
Polyethylene Glycol also known as “Go Lytly” is a laxative that is given to patients before a colonoscopy. You have to drink a gallon of this prior to the procedure!
Kathie, the article I posted about is PROPYLENE glycol not POLYETHYLENE! Sorry you were confused. Go and re read the article-hope it makes more sense now.
Duh! What a nitwit! Note to self read the whole article esp the heading before posting!
Thanks for alerting us to this and sharing this post with us on Seasonal Celebration!
Thanks Rebecca!
I must admit, I am a real label reader – it’s amazing the things they sneak into some products! This is a very interesting post – thank you for sharing it.
Hey April! I love that you are a label reader-we all need to be! It is even more important today than it was a year and years ago. Thanks for reading the post! Blessings!
Thank you for the tips! Hopefully, this will soon become as known to people as BPA and the other more commonly discussed toxins.

Oh Carrie, I do need your help!!! We’ve been trying to take this stuff out of our home for the last couple of months. Problem is…I was a stockpiler….often free or nearly free things of toothpaste, shampoo, etc. is waiting in closets and drawers to be used. And we can’t afford to just throw the stuff out…and buy all natural {we are saving every penny right now to move}. I need to pick your brain…when I have a free second…which I don’t seem to ever have. But know that I so want to go all natural in my home…and I can and would appreciate your help. Feel free to post informative articles and blog posts on my page or message them to me. Thanks!
Hey Jen!
Thanks for your sweet note! I am more than happy to help! That is my heart’s desire… to help others! Honored! I have sent you an email. Blessings to you!
